Knitting...that rocks.

I obtained a copy of Bags that Rock by Kelley Deal from the library and I have looked through the whole book and it is really very well written with good information about wools, felting, and the supplies that she uses. There is something for beginner to experienced and Kelley's ideas are definitely outside the box and really ROCK!! She gives ideas for those who want to stay in the box too. This book gave me so many more ideas to create from super diva to graffiti. I love it when that happens. The turtleneck bag is super cute and using guitar strings for straps is way too creative. Now I know what I can use those cello strings for as they are too expensive to just toss out.

I personally didn't know how to make a felted bag until my Kimmy and Sammy and I get compliments on Kimmy almost everyday.

I highly recommend this book. I am going to look for a copy to purchase to put in my private library. So hop on the road bus of felted bags and become a ROADIE with the rest of us.

Bible...a few notes.

Moses doesn't get to go into the Promised Land due to him striking the second rock to get water. I always thought it was from throwing the tablets at the golden calf to destroy it. That's what I get for watching handsome Charlton Heston too much!!

Nope. Our Lord Your God told him to strike the first rock to get water when everyone was thirsty and then for the second rock while wandering, Our Lord Your God told him to speak to the rock to get water for the pesky, thirsty Israelites, and Moses was so frustrated with the Israelites he struck the rock and God did not want Moses to look bad so provided the water anyway but Moses' punishment for striking the second rock against God's wishes, was that he would not go to the Promised Land. Sheesh.(oops, watch out for that really long run-on sentence. I just had to say it all in one).

Truly, I feel so bad for Moses as he desperately wants to go to the Promised Land and he has done so much for such complaining whiners. The Israelites are constantly doing everything they shouldn't and Moses had to save them several times from total annihilation from Our Lord Your God. It really is a shame.

I am now in Deuteronomy. Aaron and Miriam (Moses' brother and sister) have passed away and Aaron's son has now taken over the priesthood and Joshua now gets to lead the whining Israelites into the Promised Land. I'm still sad for Moses. (yes, I know its a done deal by now).

I just love Proverbs. A co-worker mentioned a study they are doing with the Tao and Proverbs and several other books of interest and he found, in his opinion, that many of them take their wisdom from Proverbs. I find that interesting.

Proverbs 12:1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.

Several people come to my mind when I read Proverbs 11 & 12. Especially the first verse in 12, which I provided for convenience. Do you have anyone that comes to your mind when you read it? I bet you do. Link to 11 & 12 they have such wisdom in the words. It really made me think and if you take one verse for each day its not so overwhelming.

Its also interesting to me that I had a fleeting thought of skipping out on my daily reading whereupon I became so sick for one day that I began reading again. Coincidence??? Its anyone's guess really but I do enjoy irony--I suspect Our Lord Your God knows this and decided to teach me a quiet, and very unpleasant lesson. Man cannot live on bread alone, and neither it seems can I.

Information...focus.

I don't know about you but for me I have trouble with focus. In the reading I've done it could be my age. Yeah, let's go with that for my reasoning.

In my additional reading I am finding that being present is a good idea and in my opinion working on focus could be one of the key issues to work on and help with being present. As a society we concentrate so much on goals and the future we forget about the here and now and just being present. Don't get me wrong, I believe having goals is a good thing. I also think that being present in the moment is important too.

Knitting...Lizbeth done.

Lizbeth is done. Yeah. Picture is unblocked. Need to weave in two ends and block but I am so happy that I had to post a picture. This shawl has been waiting since July of 2010 to be completed. A wip, UFO, dreaded knit bites the dust. Fourteen more to go.

Knitting...2011 Kalendar.

I recently made a promise to myself to finish the knitting projects (wips-works in progress) that I have already started before starting anything more and no new yarn either (stash busting to minimize). I have done fairly well with this idea, except for the attached photo, which is the new 2011 Kalendar project of Around the World in 80 Days by Neverfrog and will end in December 2011.

The character I have based my shawl on is Phineas Fogg. I did stash bust and am using a merino/tencel blend, lace weight. It has been terrific to see everyone's projects on Ravelry. I enjoy seeing all the different colour choices, just gorgeous.

I am currently finishing up the Lizbeth shawl, which I began in July 2010.
And I am on the month of October for my 2010 Kalendar shawl.

Best Advice...

Best advice for this week...create a good habit. It doesn't even have to replace a bad one. How easy it that??? I like it! No excuses, no apologies, no reasoning as to why I have a bad habit, just create a good one. In time, the hope would be that it replaces a bad habit.

Shibori class... I'm a newbie.

I ran into the art of Shibori while in the library searching for information on dying yarn last June. It's absolutely amazing and I fell in love. I have recently signed up to take a class from Shibori Girl. She has such lovely silk projects. I decided to try this even though I am very much a beginner. Little did I know how truly amazing this art is.

The picture is of my first attempt. Its very sad. I should be embarrassed to post the picture -- I'm not. I will be using it again for my additional dyeing projects. Hopefully, I will improve as time goes by.

Things I've learned:

1. Shibori is much harder than it looks. Shibori Girl certainly makes it look easy. This is no understatement. It is harder and Glennis really does make this look easy--she is an amazing artist.

Lesson 1 - itajeme - clamp and shape resists

2. even though you have read the directions. Read them again and again. I really missed a lot (to my own embarrassment). Such is life.

3. prepare your fabric. This means wash and dry it. Not put it in vinegar/water solution like I did. The vinegar does not take out the chemicals you want to take out (Note to self: this is not yarn). Washing it in a mild dish soap or woolite or euclan wash does. My fabrics are now washed and dried.

4. Never, EVER, EVER try to fold silk fabric when its wet (or at least large wet silk pieces when you are a newbie). It's like trying to fight with a spider web.

Yes, I did this and almost had a panic attack because of my struggle with it--I thought this thing is going to Kill Me!! Newspaper headlines read: "Local Woman Dies while Dyeing" or "Local Woman Dies Wrapped in Silk -authorities are wondering if this is strange new cult practice or serial killer".

Now I know how Frodo felt when he was caught in Her web. You need about eight hands, arms legs and feet to work with it when its wet. At this point you need to return back to your directions; dry your fabric --which it drys in about 3 minutes (ok that's an exaggeration--not by much) it does dry very quickly; then fold it when its dry; place your resists where you want them; clamp it; then wet it thoroughly; (or wet then clamp??--read directions again???) and now the fabric is ready to dye.

5. when first learning Shibori start with very small pieces to dye. You have a better chance at success and its less discouraging.

When learning something new taking "baby" steps is always best. It is definitely more fun to be successful at something new than bad at it (gee--ask me how I know this one!!---please refer back to the picture if you are having trouble answering this).

Lesson 2 - stitched Shibori - I have not tried this yet (crosses fingers; throws salt over left shoulder--or is it the right shoulder??; silent prayers to heaven).

My first example is now cut up into smaller sizes; washed and folded and ready for my second attempt. The good thing about my first "failure" is that I can use it as practice pieces for my next attempts. I actually do not see it as a "failure." I see it as a very good learning experience. I have totally solidified in my brain what NOT to do, which I will remember for a very long time. That's the great thing about "mistakes" you learn more from them than you do when everything goes correctly.

I am very excited to begin again - right after I read the directions (again). Deep breath.

Nasty Virus...round 2.

I have since received 4 more notifications from UPS. Each one gets better. It now has a notification number assigned to it where as before it didn't. Of note the real UPS number has 25 numbers in it. The one I received has 9. Don't open it, its a virus.

Keep in mind UPS is not going to be the one sending you the notification. It will most likely be the place from which you made your purchase. Delete the notification or you will have to reload your computer as this notification IS A VIRUS. Ask me how I know. Yes, I got the virus. I was able to reboot in safe mode and restore to a prior date. F8 is safe mode and you hit this when you shut down in restart. You only have a couple of seconds to choose safe mode when you restart.

I purchased Japanese Garden Shawl by Wendy Johnson and Mitered Crosses blanket by Kay Gardiner from Mason Dixon Knitting as all monies for both will be 100% donated to the Red Cross and Mercy Corps respectfully until sometime in April. I enjoy reading how they both like clicking the donate button and how much has been donated. Quite a lot. Way to go knitters!! (BTW - I wrote these down as a purchase).

Track Your Spending...

Track Your Spending is a Be More With Less project. She also does 333. 33 items from your wardrobe for 3 months project. I didn't do that one but I thought I could track my spending for a month.

It wouldn't hurt to see where my money is going for the next 30 days and to obtain some insight on how to be better about budgeting. Its only been six days and I am already cringing. Geez, no wonder why I can't seem to make ends meet. ITS 'CAUSE THEY DON'T!!! (the all caps are for me not you).

I created a mini-Excel worksheet and keep it in my purse so I can write down my purchases right then. It has: date/vendor/amount

There is no need to write about excuses or reasons for the purchase. Short, sweet and simple. I can do that. Right?? so why am I already cringing???

Adventures of the Garden Goddess 2011...Seeds.

With help from DD, we raked the backyard on Sunday. I am very pleased with the progress so far. I just hope I don't run out of steam (crosses fingers) before harvest. I then took stock of the seeds that I currently have which I purchased on sale last fall. Here are pictures of the seeds that I have. Looks like all I need to purchase are carrots, which I purchased after taking this picture since I was headed to the store.

I must really like pumpkin because I have about four packages of them. I promise not to plant them all.

I have one last area to clean out and roto-tilling will be next.

Nasty Virus...created by mean people.

Well, I have been down all morning because I received an email from the United Postal Service - tracking notification, and I opened it and it gave me a lovely irritating spyware notification that became a virus and left my computer disabled that all I could do was look at that notification.

I had to do a complete shut down, open in safe mode and do a restore to a prior date before I could work again. I am just thankful that I was able to do this.

In this case, do as I say not as I do, and do NOT open the UPS tracking notification email. delete, delete, delete. And the person or people who do this kind of stuff need to be strangled. Now I understand why "Our Lord Your God" swallowed people like this up with the earth--because they deserve it!!! --and yes, I am just a little bit irritated over all of this!

Japan...

I have been remiss in not mentioning this earlier. My thoughts are with the Japanese and all those in this area. The continuing days for everyone there will be trying ones and not only for people but for all life there at this time. Some stories:

My thoughts are all I have and my words are no where near what they need to be.

Did you remember to wear green today? I did, but only on a fluke. Too funny, I smile each time I look at myself today knowing that I am wearing green only because I haven't worn my favorite green shirt in awhile and had to wear it today.

Adventures of the Garden Goddess 2011...The Plot.

The Plot is a main character in this garden adventure. I can only hope that my areas of planting will look better in the during and after photos than the before (crosses fingers and eyes towards heaven in a silent prayer).

The tomatoes and sun loving plants will go on my front parking area. I have not watered this area for the past 3-5 years and it is full of the dreaded crab grass.

The place with sticks will be the area for squash and semi-sun loving plants.

The area with the fence (do you see my blackberries and raspberries??--No??? are you sure?? --- well, I told you they were sad) will be for the shade loving plants.

The plain area is next to the stick area and I still have to decide what to put there. Maybe I'll leave the sticks and put the squash here. Oh, that's not good. I am already downsizing my garden and I haven't even started yet.

I bet you are wondering why I am saving all the sticks?? For a rainy day, of course.

That's the plot for now. Good day. :)

Useful information...static cling.

I never knew that if you put tinfoil in your dryer with your clothes it takes out the static cling. Nor did I know that if you want to get a food smell off your hands to rub your hands on stainless steal.

Bible...Numbers.

I am in Numbers now and have found that the Old Testament has become very interesting and I cannot wait to see what happens next to those squirrel-ly, obstinate Israelites. Oh my, can they complain any louder?? sheesh.

I would be absolutely terrified by "Our Lord Your God" after seeing Aaron's two older sons incinerated by such an innocent mistake but not those Israelites. Man -o-man, do they try anyone's patience.

At one point, Miriam and Aaron try a coup against Moses because they are jealous that Moses gets to speak to God all the time. Do they not see that Moses would be happy to give up such an honor as it is very hard work??? In fact he is happy to march over to God and ask for a transfer, he doesn't get one. "Our Lord Your God" punishes Miriam by giving her leprosy and informs them that Aaron is next if they don't settle down. EEEk!!!

Then there is another coup against Aaron and his younger son's for being high priests. You can only guess what "Our Lord Your God" has in store for these folks. The main instigators and all of their families and families' family and all of their possessions, animals too are swallowed up by the earth alive and it is as if they never existed. Wow, now that's a punishment. Even the innocent are punished for just being related to these two guys.

Be careful who you hang out with and what is in your heart or theirs, you just might have to take an unpleasant fall for it.

Taygete...done.

Finished knitting the Taygete shawl by Romi(great designer). I disliked my colours intensely so I overdyed again and again with Kool-Aid. First with 2 grape and the red was still red. Then with 2 Berry Blue and this thankfully muted my reds enough that I can now look at it without cringing. Before picture is the bright red-orange. After colours muted more purple with red tones. Its lovely.

Best Advice...

The best advice today I received while watching a movie last night.

It is: "You can love completely without having to understand." from A River Runs Through It.

I find myself thinking that I have to understand the people I care about when that just isn't the case. It's almost as if I have failed at the relationship if I don't understand them. Not true either. They are just fine being who they need to be and so am I. It doesn't take understanding them at all. It takes understanding that we can love each other unconditionally without having to understand each other. That's where we fail in the relationship by not understanding this.

Another helpful book:

I purchased this book last May with the good intentions of starting a garden. Not surprisingly, I did not follow through (is that a double negative-I just wrote??).

It's a big book and seems a little overwhelming if you are one of those who must start on page one and read through to the end. This is not that kind of book. You really need to read only the parts you need. And with beginners (that's me), the author states to only plant the easy to grow plants (me again) the first year of gardening. I like this advice and if you only ever feel comfortable with the easy plants then that's all you should deal with (hmmm, me again??). The author wants you to be successful and keep gardening.

The nice thing about this book is that she actually informs you how to harvest too, which is what I was looking for since I accidentally had an onion start to grow on me. I planted it indoors in a big empty pot I have but do not know how to harvest the onions from it and this book had my answer to that.

Coolio Winter Activities...Skijoring and Dog Sledding.

Who needs Mardi Gras, when you have Skijoring and Dog sledding!!

I realize that most of you are looking forward to Spring. Not me!! It means gardening for me so I'll take winter as long as I can get it! Yeah, snow!!

This weekend I traipsed up to Leadville, Colorado. At 10,200 feet and it really does take your breath away, literally.

The first weekend in March is the annual Skijoring race. Skijoring = a skier pulled through an obstacle course either by a snowmobile or horse. While on the obstacle course the skier has jumps to jump and must catch 6 round rings (set out at different places on the obstacle course) on one arm while holding on to a rope with the other arm as he is being pulled. Each ring missed is a 2 second penalty. The skier must be standing when crossing the finish line. Skijoring can also be a skier being pulled by a dog too.

I was very impressed with all the athletes, human and animal. Every athlete loved what they were doing. The skijorers were pulled by snowmobiles and horses. It was amazing to me that the horses could go just as fast as the snowmobiles. Each horse could only run twice and had at least a 10 minute rest between runs. The skier could make as many runs as they wanted. And once a horse had run twice it did not run any more.

It also happened to be the Mt. Massive Dog Sled and Skijoring race at the golf course. Wow, what great sports these are. The dogs were amazing. Most of them were mutts from the dog pound and slender. Not the malamutes or Siberian huskies you would expect. The slender mutts run just as well and have just as much stamina. They were quiet the whole time and when the sleds started to be set up they went nuts with barking and howling. They wanted to go, go, go. Each dog was checked by a vet beforehand to make certain they were well enough to run. Most of the human dog sledders were women and their ages were from 11 years to 60 years. Amazing!! The fastest dog sledder was the woman in blue in my first pictures. The Starter would do a count down at 1 min then 30 seconds, then 10 and when he hit 5 seconds you could feel the adrenaline rush of everyone there and the dogs went wild. It was so exciting to see the start!! And then its wait for the teams to come in.

The lady in blue had a pre-trial time of approximately 15 minutes, which means her and her dogs were going on average about 30 miles per hour.

I really recommend that if you ever get the chance you should really try to attend one of these sporting events. Remember, first weekend in March, Leadville, Colorado.

Manifestation...an interesting story about Hockey.

A while back, actually November 2010, I took an acquaintance to a hockey game as a thank you for helping me out. I had recently been reading about manifestation and wrote either here or in my journal informing the universe that I was ready to receive my wealth. That evening I was standing in line to purchase hockey tickets when a gentleman walked up, whom I thought was going to cut in line in front of me and I was going to allow him to move ahead of me. Instead he asked me if I would like some tickets and I replied, "yes, how much?" He informed me they were free. Excellent notion.

The seats were two rows up from the ice. More than just excellent, they were "epic" seats. It was a wonderful evening and I later joking made a comment that I would like to receive my wealth all at once not just a little bit at a time. I think the universe has other ideas for me (sigh).

Recently, last week, it was suggested by an acquaintance to attend another hockey game. I agreed, looking very much forward to it and after agreeing that it would be such a terrific idea I looked up and stated out loud, "ok, I'm ready to receive free tickets again."

You guessed it...this time as we are walking from the parking area to the building to purchase tickets, I notice a red, dodge pick-up waiting with its engine running. As we are walking by, the gentleman in the pick-up asked us if we needed tickets and again my response was, "yes, how much?" Once again, they were free. Excellent. Now if only I could work the lotto winnings so easily (first you have to play it--I suppose that's part of the reason).

These tickets were even better this time. First row, right on the ice. Wooo-hooo. Luckily I did move us up a row (since it was empty) as the kid sitting next to me left his drink on the wall ledge to the ice rink and the hockey players ran into the wall right there and the kid ended up with his drink all over himself (and my empty chair).

I do so enjoy life when fortune smiles on me (even though this seemed a little freaky to me at the time). It really is the little things. and the kid did dry out.

Oh, yeah and the hockey game was a good one too. We Won!

Adventures of the Garden Goddess 2011...March-Plants to Plant

Decisions, Decisions. What do I (hypothetically-since its anybody's guess as to how successful I will actually be) want to eat during the summer months from my garden. The beloved children's rhythm comes to mind here: "Mary, Mary quite contrary how does your garden grow?"

Here's an idea for mine:
lettuce - Romain, red leaf (grow from seed)
tomatoes - (purchase plants)
squash - zucchini, yellow, acorn (grow from seed)
pumpkin - (grow from seed)
watermelon - (grow from seed)
cantaloupe - (grow from seed)
cucumber - (grow from seed)
bell peppers - (purchase plants)
jalapeno peppers - (purchase plants)
carrots - (grow from seed)and you can re-plant several times to grow more
radishes - (grow from seed)-ditto
snap peas - (grow from seed)
mushrooms - grow inside in a cool dark wet place (this should be fun)
rhubarb - (grow from seed)

Herbs: mint (already grow and it grows like a weed-yeah for me)
basil, parsley, rosemary, thyme

fruit plants that I currently have: strawberries (these are sad), black berries (these are very sad), raspberries (these are up and down).

marigolds -I read in a magazine (Mother Earth-back in the 1980's) that marigolds keep pests away as they don't like the smell of them and it makes your garden pretty.

I have been doing some research and different plants may grow well together. So its a good idea to grow "complementary" plants next to or with one another. Or companion planting as the book shows.Carrots Love Tomatoes. Interesting isn't it?

This will be my new subject for this year. Stay tuned as you may learn what NOT to do. (Remember I told you I stink at stuff like this - at least I get an A for thinking about it).

Plan
March:
1. take a look at the area(s) in which I have decided to plant. (take pictures)
2. What types of vegetables do I want to grow. What grows well in the shade, sun, etc.
3. prepare the land - rototill the areas I want to plant. Fertilize the areas-organic fertilizer only.
4. plant seeds or buy plants. (April - May)
5. water the plants and weed (April - October)
6. harvest (if there is anything to harvest)

Of note: I do not believe in using poisons to get rid of weeds or using man-made chemicals for fertilizer. I guess that means this will be an organic garden, which means a lot of work.

Plan: Weeds-use a hoe and elbow grease to get rid of weeds
fertilizer - use my compost pile for fertilizer (save waste foods to compost-keep in a pest free container).

Knitting...Dyeing.

My Taygate is coming along. I am back to liking it and I may not have to overdye. Yeah me. The picture is with Chart C completed through R7. Now to begin picking up stitches all the way around and finish with a knit-in-the-round Picot bind-off.

Silk Dying class with Shibori Girl begins next week and I am very excited. I received the materials in the mail yesterday. I still have a few supplies to pick up before class. I simply cannot wait to dive into this. I have ideas for paperclips and hot wax. There are lines in my head that I believe can be created with the wax and then dye the material. I can also use rubber stamps. Really the ideas are endless.

Still haven't received my swap package from the recent knitting Valentine's swap that I did. Either the person is walking it to me; it got misplaced during transit; or didn't get sent--and that's the interesting thing about these knitting swaps you never know if the other person on the other side will follow through or the possibility of it disappearing during transit. I will admit I was looking forward to receiving something on Valentine's. Such is life.

Suggestions... instead of doom and gloom.

Well it seems all you're getting from me is doom and gloom and who wants to read that??? Certainly not me.

So here's an idea when you get here go to Be More With Less instead to read 50 other posts about how important words and/or ideas are.

The world today...

My concerns lie with the world today. What will the world be like tomorrow?

Libya is in turmoil these days. Previously it was Egypt. My thoughts are with these people who are trying to make a positive improvement. Will they get it? Maybe, maybe not.

Do you realize the main reason these people are upset?? It is not because of the actual dictatorship, it is because of higher food prices. These people on average use 50% of their income earned for food and the prices went up. FIFTY PERCENT!!! Can you believe that? We need to learn from them because this issue is coming our way and will be here soon. At this moment on average only 5% (FIVE percent) of our (USA) income is used for food. Imagine how lucky we are that 95% of our money is used for other things.

My thoughts are also selfish too. Will USA be next? I believe our lives are interconnected with all people in the world. Oil prices are going to go up. Clothing prices are going to go up. Food prices are going to go up. My plans for my own garden increase even though I know I am terrible at it. But I believe its best to have a plan even if I stink at it.

Life is going to get very uncomfortable for our future too. And still Congress is no help when they could be. Off shore drilling needs to increase. Drilling for oil in states where there is oil should be done. Gasoline is already over $3.00 a gallon. Nixing ethanol subsidies so that farmers grow food that you can eat instead of being paid for food you cannot would help with future starvation because of higher food prices; heck, higher prices in general for everything will cause hunger.

Living is going to become very uncomfortable for the very near future. I hope that you are getting your own plan of action in order because you are going to need it.
