Proverbs 22:10-12

I like verse 11 today as it reminds me to watch what I say and more importantly HOW I say it. Be compassionate.

Proverbs 22:8-9

8 Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity,
and the rod they wield in fury will be broken.

9 The generous will themselves be blessed,
for they share their food with the poor.

I see people who are constantly furious about one thing or another. Whether it be driving, how people act, how loud someone is, etc. Do you see it too?

I really like verse 9 as I try to share with others when I have been blessed.

Remember to have compassion for others today and everyday.

Spinning....Hanks in the Hood.

Hello,
here is some recent spinning that I've been doing. This is Hanks in the Hood-Hood River colorway, which I purchased from Knit Picks when I didn't know what I would like to spin so I got a whole bunch of stuff. This is a bamboo / Merino mix and difficult for me to spin or let's just say it's not a fav.

I'm learning and working my way slowly through it. POTKU spun this up too. I think I like hers better. hmmm.... oh, well its good practice for getting back to my cupcakes fiber. I am on my second bobbin.

Side note: I was able to actually pick up a vintage jumbo flyer & bobbin that belongs to my vintage upright wheel. Yeah me. I plan on using it to ply my two bobbins together. Should be an interesting experience since I have to take the mother of all off and replace it with the jumbo. I've never taken my wheel apart.

Wish me luck as I'm challenged this way (trust me -- I almost accidentally cut my jugular vein in my neck this past weekend trying to fix my fence---or in the alternative I was very, very lucky not to have broken my jaw---but that's enough of that story). Still alive and kickin'.

As I said I'm challenged.

These words are so very true and make you think. I am busy paying off my debt and hope to be done by December of this year. It is such a noose around my neck and is much better to deal with it and get rid of it than to create more. I hope you make the decision to be debt free too. It is such a relief.

Proverbs 22:5-6

but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.

6 Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Verse 5 is very good advice in that it recommends that you make wise judgements regarding whom to be around. We all recognize people in our lives that we should stay away from don't we? I believe we do. I started to cull people from my life who are negative, do you do this too? I hope you are wise about your choices and that you stay away from those who create snares and pitfalls for you. Remember you allowed them this leeway in you life.

The Lord is the Maker of them all.

3 The prudent see danger and take refuge,

Verse 3 reminds me of me. Am I simple? and keep going? will I pay my penalty? will it be soon? and what will the penalty be? will it be painful? will it bring me great sorrow?

Proverbs 21:28-29

28 A false witness will perish,
but a careful listener will testify successfully.

29 The wicked put up a bold front,
but the upright give thought to their ways.

I like both verses today. I constantly see people today reasoning as to why the inappropriate things they do and say are ok when we all know they are not. Do you run into that too? Verse 28 reminds me once again to listen. Not only to listen---to be a careful listener, which is a good lesson.

Verse 29 reminds me of a recent incident that I had with a neighbor and how we got into a big argument over trash. I know, it is unbelievable what some people will argue about, including myself. Long story short, he is the scourge of the neighborhood and everyone is terrified of him and his sons and now grandchildren, including me, although I'm too silly, foolish, idiotic (insert your own word here---I know a word came immediately to your mind) to back down. One day, he or his spawn will do away with me. Anyhoo, he and his put up a very bold front and I am always confronting them. The neighborhood watches (and witnesses at a later court date) in terror. Hopefully, Our Lord Your God looks out for fools too and not just over children (crosses fingers).

Proverbs 21:27

27 The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable —
how much more so when brought with evil intent!

I like today's verse so much and as simple as it seemed I felt the need to look at what John Gill's commentary might state about it and the commentary gave my chills down my spine, as it is so profound: the wicked may be able "... to deceive men, yet he cannot deceive the Lord."

It seems that "sacrifice" may mean actions or intention---as John Gill comments.

Hiking...St Mary's Falls, North Cheyenne Canyon, Colorado

Here are some lovely pictures of St Mary's Falls located in North Cheyenne Canyon. It was a lovely, shaded hike and not too strenuous. In fact, I was given to believe it would be a difficult hike like 7 Bridges and actually 7 Bridges is much more strenuous.

I remember verse 19 from a year ago. Personally, I can't stand nagging from anyone.

Verse 20 is a very good idea these days. I recently purchased Anasazi beans, supposedly they do not give you flatulence. I have been reading about being more prepared and looking into drying more items and storing them in glass. Glass is better than plastic.

This verse brings a multitude of mixed emotions as I like to help those who need help. It is tricky to help people sitting on a corner asking for money. In my opinion, the truly poor do not sit on the corner panhandling or not working at all. I believe in helping those who help themselves as Ruth did with her mother-in-law. Ruth did not sit and beg she went out and worked for the meager food supply they ate.

Judge Gilliam of Denver...words of advice to a teenager 1959

YahooNews: In 1959, Judge Philip B. Gilliam of Denver, Colorado, published a letter in the Pierce County Tribune in North Dakota.

Fast-forward just over half a century when in 2010 the Tribune's editor posted the letter on the paper's website. From there, principal John Tapene all the way in New Zealand posted the letter in his school's newsletter. Finally, some of Judge Gilliam's wise words found their way to Canadian radio station 96.7, which posted the letter to its Facebook wall with the title "Every teenager should have this framed and hung on their wall in their room."

The popular Facebook post has been shared more than 11,000 times and counting. Here's a snippet of what the letter says: "Your parents do not owe you entertainment. Your city or village does not owe you recreational facilities. The world does not owe you a living. ... Grow up; quit being a crybaby. Get out of your dream world and develop a backbone, not a wishbone, and start acting like a man or a lady."

At the rate that this post is being shared on social media, it proves that good advice never goes out of style.

Always we hear the plaintive cry of the teen-ager. What can we do?...Were can we go?

Hang the storm windows, paint the woodwork. Rake the leaves, mow the lawn, shovel the walk. Wash the car, learn to cook, scrub some floors. Repair the sink, build a boat, get a job.

I remember speaking to someone about mission statements for businesses and he recommended one business statement for all businesses, "to do the right thing at all times."

He informed me that anything more than that just confuses everyone. I think his recommendation is pretty smart and it turns out that even the writer of Proverbs, which is most likely King Solomon, recommends the same thing.

skunked...

Yep, you guessed it by the title, my dog has been skunked again. Last time I used tomato juice, and from my reading this is NOT the thing to do. In fact, it can at times increase the smell, yuck!

Proverbs 20:28-30

28 Love and faithfulness keep a king safe;
through love his throne is made secure.

29 The glory of young men is their strength,
gray hair the splendor of the old.

30 Blows and wounds scrub away evil,
and beatings purge the inmost being.

I like all three verses today. They give simple answers to the questions we may have about life and which we may think need a more convoluted and difficult answer when in reality the answer is not.

Take verse 29 ---there are specific positive uses for young men and for old men and neither should have resentment towards the other. We should enjoy each year that each of us experience.

As for verse 30 --- for some of us it takes many times before we learn what we should. Hence the lesson, over and over.

My reading is not all negative and judgements. Today's daily verse is much more positive and I thought to share it too (I do like Psalms):

“For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.” Psalm 149:4 NIV

I did read John Gill's commentary for each verse and
provide a link for the last one.

This is the end of Proverbs 20 and once again I like the first verse and I thought to share it again too:

Proverbs in a Year...Aug 7.

Proverbs 20:26-27

26 A wise king winnows out the wicked;
he drives the threshing wheel over them.

27 The human spirit is[a] the lamp of the Lord
that sheds light on one’s inmost being.

Verse 26 describes quite the horrible death of someone who is wicked. EEgads, my imagination runs wild with this verse. John Gill's commentary that this may be alluding to the time period this verse was written and the acceptable punishment of same.

John Gill has an interesting commentary for verse 27 and I provided a link to it so that you may read for yourself one person's opine.
The latter half of the verse deals with judgements made.


Lately I've been having problems about feeling insecure about judegments. I have found that people and their judgements terrify me. It's irrelevant how I got to this place, it is important to let my own insecurity about others and their judgements disappear. Because in the end, what will my fear change? Who will it harm? Not them, just me.

Today's daily verse is about judging and I thought to share it:

“For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us.” Isaiah 33:22 NIV

I'm a foodie...Yes, I am...

New York strip steak. Red pepper sweet potato salad

Once more I bring you the grilled red pepper sweet potato salad----mmm,yum, yum. This time paired with a New York strip steak (cooked medium), fresh garden salad, and side plate of sliced strawberries and white cheddar cheese.

To drink a 2009 Luminous Hills Estate Grown Pinot Noir and a mojito which was for appetizers but I didn't get it all drank before dinner was ready so it came to dinner too, I also had a glass of water but too many glasses make for a cluttered picture. (Please do not drink and drive).

The Pinot Noir was almost overpowered by all the great tastes in this meal. It still held its own and remember...for Pinot Noir---colour does NOT matter.

This was a lovely delicious meal. and here's the link to the recipe. The jalapeno peppers were not used in this salad and they are optional.

Grilled salmon, grilled red pepper sweet potato salad

Hello, I am catching up on all my food posts today (ie, I remembered to bring my phone to computer connection).

Isn't this a lovely picture? I was recently invited to a friends home for dinner and this is what was served. Grilled salmon, grilled red pepper sweet potato salad and grilled sweet potato slices. Paired with a favorite wine of mine, a viognier from Dascomb cellars. (reminder do not drink and drive). It was all very tasty. A lovely explosion of colour for your eyes, bouquet for your nose, and tastes for your tongue.

I fell in love with the grilled red pepper sweet potato salad, so much so that while raving about it to a friend I was asked what the main course was and could not for the life of me remember what it was. I had to look at my picture to remember that it was salmon. LOL

Aren't the colours of the salad just divine? Red, orange and the green of the cilantro make it pop. It had a cilantro lime salad dressing that completed it and made it luscious and it tasted even better than it looks.

Truly, if you want to impress, google "grilled red pepper sweet potato salad" and you should have a recipe pop up. Its delish.

Appaloosa Flour-less Chocolate cake

I am all about the presentation of food and this one isn't bad. I added the cloth napkin underneath for a more classic touch.

I was recently in Denver for Florence + the Machine concert and we went to the Appaloosa Restaurant. It's not a bad place to go, has good food, and good service. the only negative comment that I have about the place is that the interior reverbs the noise pretty loudly and makes it difficult to hear what the person you are with said.

I will say that The Broadmoor is still THE place to go for flour-less chocolate cake it's absolutely to die for. Truly melts in your mouth, sensual experience.

Proverbs in a Year...Aug 2.

Proverbs 20:16-18

16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider.

17 Food gained by fraud tastes sweet,
but one ends up with a mouth full of gravel.

18 Plans are established by seeking advice;
so if you wage war, obtain guidance.

Verse 16 is about being careful when putting up security for others. In fact, if you recall in Proverbs 6:1 we are told to not do this at all or it may become our own ruin. This actually means that each of us should only purchase that which we have actual cash for---not credit. A wise way to live. John Gill has a helpful commentary for this verse.

I like verse 17 very much. Have you ever stolen anything? I have. I stole a white milk from the lunch line when I was in 8th grade. It made me nauseous after I drank it and for the rest of that day. I never knowingly stole anything else until a Christmas Tree while I was married to Mr. X --- (its a sad long story)---I didn't decorate it until I went back and paid for it. Be careful how you obtain things in your life. Each of us must be ever watchful of our own actions and how they harm others including ourselves.

Verse 18 reminds me to choose my battles wisely and to seek the wise counsel of others that I trust and/or respect if I do eventually choose one. Always sage advice as there have been times when I have chosen a battle and it wasn't worth it.

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

I'm a foodie... Yes I am...

Cilantro Lime Shrimp

I found the recipe over at Simply Recipes. I love this blog. Even I, who burns everything, can handle some of the recipes that she provides. Case in point the Cilantro Lime Shrimp. I used fresh cilantro from my garden, since that seems to be one of the only things I am able to grow this year in my garden, and I substituted the peppers with jalapeno peppers, mmmm yummy spicy. I pared it with edamame and a fresh salad. The lettuce was from my garden too (I am the lettuce growing queen). I should have made rice too but forgot that. I paired it with rose wine with a splash of lime. Rose is quite the fad this year. Normally I do not drink rose but even I am susceptible to fads.

Proverbs in a Year...Aug 1.

I am very thankful that July is over. Everyone I know has acted strangely and out of character since Friday the 13th. Today is a full moon and hopefully a new energy.

Proverbs 20:13-15

13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor;
stay awake and you will have food to spare.

14 “It’s no good, it’s no good!” says the buyer—
then goes off and boasts about the purchase.

15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance,
but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.

I really enjoyed reading today's verses and of course, each one reminds me of individuals that I know and care about. Verse 13 reminds me of the whole generation that I had a part in raising. Verse 14 can be me at times and since I have been uncluttering I think about my purchases more and most times wait 3 or 4 days before purchasing. Verse 15 reminds me that speaking knowledge also means being tactful and compassionate at the same time too.

I enjoyed reading today's verse too and thought to share it as well:
